FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT AAU OR CLUB TEAM IS BEST FOR MY SON TO PLAY FOR?
You don’t have to play for “the best team,” or “a shoe circuit team,” or “the best club.” Play for a team and a coach who values your son and develops him as a player and a young man. No one will ever remember how many games you won as a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grader. If my son can start to play with players from his area and form some chemistry and connection, this can mean way more in the long run. In addition, if my son can start to learn the language and terminology that is taught in the local high school at a young age, it will benefit him in the long run.
WHAT DO FASTBREAK BASKETBALL TEAMS FOCUS ON?
We try to emphasize fundamentals. We want to teach spacing and moving without the ball. We will emphasize dribbling, defense, shooting, and passing drills every day. We will always try to avoid gimmicks to win games at the youth level. Youth teams should learn how to play man-to-man basketball, not just press the opposing 3rd grade team to get a win. Pressing defenses and zones are important to know how to do but should not be the main focus to win games at a young age.
IS IT IMPORTANT TO PLAY WITH TEAMS IN YOUR AREA?
We feel it is important to play with your friends, preferably local to where you live, and for a coach that your kids can look up to, learn from, and respect. A coach should be uplifting and encouraging but also hold your kid accountable and push them.
HOW MUCH TRAVELING SHOULD WE BE DOING AT A YOUNG AGE?
You don’t need to be traveling out of state every weekend to develop as an 8-, 9-, or 10-year-old. I’d say that travel starts getting more important around 7th or 8th grade. Even then, it should be limited, maybe 2-3 times a year, depending on the opportunities and the level of your son.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS FOR THE YOUTH PLAYERS PARTICIPATING IN FASTBREAK BASKETBALL?
For the majority of our players, of course, the goal is to play high school varsity. We want to emphasize the great things that sports can teach that translate into their life. We want each player to maximize their ability to learn basketball and be pushed into competitive environments. We are helping them find success in the process and journey of becoming a great individual player, but more importantly, a great team player.
You DON'T have to play for FASTBREAK TEAMS to make it onto the HERRIMAN HIGH SCHOOL team. The best players will play, but getting involved with the Herriman coaching staff’s club from an early age gets your player more accustomed to how we run things. They’ll feel more comfortable in our system, and the transition will be much more seamless. Additionally, the coaching staff will have much more time to see your player, work with them, get to know them, and know what they’re capable of. It’s hard to know who a player is and what they’re capable of from a few open gyms and a few days of tryouts.
Again, your sons DO NOT have to play for FASTBREAK TEAMS to make the HERRIMAN team, but we believe that we will offer the best possible youth basketball option for your sons in the HERRIMAN/SOUTH JORDAN area.
